The Puppy Bowl features shelter dogs from around the country trying to score touchdowns with different toys scattered all over the mini-Super Bowl stadium. Basically the camera follows the dogs around for two hours while they wrestle over different toys and the announcers try their best to convince you there’s some order to the chaos unfolding before you.
It might just be the cutest television event of the year, and it’s as much great entertainment as it is an opportunity for Animal Planet to encourage viewers to consider adopting a shelter dog.
This year, the Puppy Bowl will feature 42 dogs on the field at once and a total of 96 players appearing over the course of the game — the most ever. You can see photos of every dog in the “starting lineup” on Animal Planet’s website.
Puppy Bowl XVI starts at 3 p.m. ET on Animal Planet and runs for two hours to 5 p.m., giving you a nice break before the kickoff for Super Bowl LIV.

Viewers in Upstate New York should be sure to cheer on some local dogs, including puppy Granny Smith, on Team Ruff. Another, older dog named George will play on Team Oldies in the Dog Bowl, a newer event that airs on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. ET, also on Animal Planet. Both dogs were sheltered at Paws Crossed Animal Rescue in Elmsford, NY.
